Raising Cultural Awareness

Guests develop genuine respect for local culture

Responsible tourism deepens cultural understanding. This sub-indicator assesses whether operators educate guests about local customs, beliefs, and heritage in a way that fosters genuine respect ā€” delivered by people with lived cultural knowledge rather than generic guides.

Whether the operator educates visitors about local culture, customs, and heritage in a respectful and meaningful way.

How RTA measures this

The same sub-indicator is assessed from two sides: operators self-assess their performance; travellers rate their experience. Both use a 1ā€“5 scale.

Operator self-assessment

ā€œHow effectively did this tour educate guests about local cultural practices and the importance of cultural respect?ā€

  1. 1We do not provide any specific sensitization / training on these issues.
  2. 2Our guides provide some basic information on local customs when necessary, for example in ethnic destinations or sensitive areas.
  3. 3We provide generic cultural do's and don'ts to travellers. And/or: our guides are able to explain them to travellers to make sure they respect local customs, sacred sites and built heritage.
  4. 4In addition to the foregoing, our guides are trained to introduce local customs / culture and heritage to our clients. And/or: we use a local guide / provide a thorough interpretation of each destination.
  5. 5In addition to the foregoing, our tour includes meeting up with the local tourism organization(s) and/or experts on a theme specific to the destination's cultural assets.
